*contains some explicit language*

As I never know what I'm going to play before playing my podcast, all I can say is that the theme turned out to be about love in Part 2... so I made a lil anecdote:

"Where ever you are in love, I wish you a safe journey. Where you're just starting, or ending, or celebrating another anniversary."

I love music! Thank you for a fun 3 years @ the HodgePodge Consortium Show.

Track listing soon...

So, folks, here's Part 1 of 3 to be posted. It's my third year of this podcast, and looking at the map of my audience, I can't imagine that when I first started this show, I'd have people tuning in in places like Africa, China, Europe, all over the United States, Tokyo and even in Israel, Russia, South America, Canada, Germany, and more... the list goes on.

Thank you to everyone who has listened since the beginning. Thank you to all the people just starting to listen in. It's been a fun ride, and I look forward to another year of me putting out my best in mixology.

Episode Tracks to be posted soon. Look for Parts two and three over the weekend.

Take care and remember to subscribe and spread the word!

It's supposed to fade in all nicely, but I'm not hearin' it on my end... maybe it was lost with the compression/conversion when I uploaded the file. But anyway...

Here is Part Two of two of the "Decision Mix", which features more dance/mashups, Stevie Nicks, MGMT, Rihanna, a Prince medley, a hint of Bowie and well... Take a listen and see!

<img src="http://djnovajade.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1088778/0x0_1858526.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />There are many decisions to be made in life, and let's just always hope that we have the good in our hearts to make the proper ones.

With that said, here is the 1st part of 2 of a 3hr and 15 minute set I recorded at Isla (8788 Sunset Blvd) on 5.19.09.

The entire set was about 5 hours, but I forgot to hit record!

This first half includes some hip hop/reggae, the Brazilian girls, Matisyahu, Jurassic 5, some funk, a dash of 80s and even Usher to round it out. It stopped at a perfect point (we sung happy birthday to someone) and part two of this episode will feature more dance/mashups, Stevie Nicks, a Prince medley, a hint of Bowie and well... Take a listen and see! It was definitely a fun night at Isla, and there may be an impromptu after-rally get-together there tonight around 11 or 12. *check back on twitter!*

Saturday after the Day of Decision! MEET IN THE MIDDLE

1:00pm | Steps of Fresno City Hall (2600 Fresno St, Fresno) We are working to galvanize a movement and knit a community that cries for FULL Access, Equality & Justice 4 ALL. As a movement, we will not have a better stage, a better moment in time, as the WORLD waits and watches for our reaction. On the FIRST Saturday AFTER the Prop 8 verdicts are announced, we are going to converge from each section of this state and neighboring states, to demonstrate our community’s statewide mobilization for FULL equality, in the epicenter of middle America values, for US, and for all our LGBT family, across this great Nation, that are discriminated against - daily. Referring to the sentiments of Harvey Milk, this is an example of a larger movement. We hope you’ll Meet in the Middle and see these efforts for yourself – in FRESNO.

Day of Decision 2009 -- Calls for Action!

Day of Decision—Los Angeles

Tuesday May 26, 10am

WHAT WILL THE COURT BE DECIDING?

The key legal issue debated before the State Supreme Court is whether Prop.8 simply amended the state Constitution or revised it (which is a more extensive change). If the initiative amended the Constitution, then it stands. If the initiative revised the Constitution, it must be approved by a 2/3 majority of the Legislature.

Most legal experts think that the court will rule against us and uphold Prop 8. Due to the recent slew of states that have made same-sex marriage legal, some think there may be a glimmer of hope that the court rules in our favor.

WHAT'S HAPPENING THE DAY OF THE DECISION?

There are several rallies, marches, and actions planned for the Day of the Decision around Los Angeles.

--10:00am CA Supreme Court issues ruling

--10:30am Lambda Legal Press Conference

            Lucy Florence Cultural Center

            3351 W. 43rd Street, L.A., CA 90008

--12-3:00pm Rally at the L.A. County Marriage License Office
4716 East Ceasar Chavez Avenue, L.A., CA 90022

Join HONOR PAC, the Latino Equality Alliance and other groups and organizations in the heart of California's Latino community to celebrate or begin the renewed battle for marriage equality. Key leaders, including Lt. Dan Choi, Father Geoff Farrow, and others will participate. Volunteers needed at 11am!
Contact Bridgett Gonzalez at bgonzalez24@aol.com.

--7:00pm Rally & March in West Hollywood

Corner of Santa Monica & San Vicente

            March to Hollywood & Highland

What to bring:

--White Ribbon to tie White Knots all along our march

--White Flowers to lay in Matthew Shepard Human Rights Park
--White Chalk to write messages in the road and on the sidewalks
--Wear White to show our unity in supporting same-sex marriage
--Bring signs and bullhorns and anything else to make noise

--9:30ish Meet us at Hollywood & Highland if you can’t make it to Weho!

HOW CAN YOU HELP??

We need you!! Sign-up to volunteer at VolunteerDOD@gmail.com and show up at 4:45pm on Tuesday May 26 in front of the West Hollywood Park Auditorium located at 647 N. San Vicente Blvd.

LEGALIZE GAY ~ 5.26.09 ~ Decision Day '09...

<img src="http://djnovajade.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1088778/0x0_708753.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Hey guys,

I'm going to be posting another podcast this week. I had originally planned on doing it today (Tuesday), but since it's Decision Day here in good ol' CAli, for all us wonderful queers, I'm not going to really stick to too many plans this day. Whether we'll be out celebrating or outraging over the Supreme Court Decision (re: <a href="http://djnovajade.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-11-06T01_59_37-08_00" target="_blank">prop 8</a>), I've got my walking shoes prepped and ready, just in case. (The above link will take you to part one of my Special Blogs from back in November '08 regarding Prop 8. More links:

<a href="http://djnovajade.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-11-07T15_37_37-08_00" target="_blank">Prop 8 November Protesting - Part 2</a>
<p>
<a href="http://djnovajade.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-11-08T16_27_22-08_00" target="_blank">Prop 8 November Protesting - Part 3</a>

<p>
Please be safe out there, be yourself no matter what, and remember that music is a healing entity. That, and love. Love between any and all, crossing borders and boundaries... Love should never be restricted because of bigotry.

I have no podcast music this "episode", but my recommendation for today:

- Pete Tosh - "Equal Rights"

Here's to us all. Here's to remaining optimistic and hopeful that the outcome will be in our favor this time 'round.

New podcast of music coming this week... It's going to be a three part podcast of a 5-hour eclectic set I did at Isla on the Sunset strip last week. I started recording two hours in, so the entire recorded set is only 3 hours and 15 minutes...

Peace,
~Nova

Woohoo!! It's spring. One of my two favorite times of the year (the other is Autumn). Bare with me as I will post tracks by the end of the week. This is a two-hour long mix, so enjoy, spread the word and spring into the magical 2nd quarter of 2009. Can you believe it's almost April!? I just got a new car, so to all those who can do it, go get yourself a new car (even if it's used). I hear April is when everything will raise in price. ;-)

Thank you for listening out there,

Dear Friends,

I am sending this to everyone to ask that you do one or more of the following after you review the following information:

• Please purchase a general admission ticket for yourself and/or for someone less-fortunate to attend an Arts Performance*
• Forward this email to EVERYONE on your email list, even if you are not a resident of or near Tampa, FL
• Blast to all your blogs, personal websites, etc.
• Spread the word via word-of-mouth, guerrilla marketing!

This project has been quite an adventure, and as we approach show-time, the entire Peace Piece collaborative team is reaching out to the WORLD to get help selling-out this one night dance-opera piece. Using the ideals that this project's rapid growth is the direct result of everyone coming together, we hope that you can help bring all of your contacts together to help spread the word far and wide!
(*It is our hope that you will be able to attend or purchase a minimum of 1 ticket through TicketMaster, as all non-attendee donated tickets will be available the day of the performance to all all students of any institution - with valid id - on a first come, first served basis).

M.a.N International Productions Inc. [in collaboration with] Rhymes With OrangeZ

Is proud to announce the official TICKETMASTER release for the one night exclusive show:

PEACE PIECE: "Take A Walk In My Shoes"

PEACE PIECE is a collaborative and interactive, multimedia on-going project that focuses on the ideals of achieving world peace through Art, while also bringing awareness to the urgent need for the funding of the Arts within our public education systems. The first entity towards the project is the live production of "Take a Walk in My Shoes", being filmed for the documentary Peace Piece [Directed by: Ryan Z Deal, Tera Greene, Marissa Alma Nick, Carla Marie Rivera] . The hour long live show is originally composed/edited by TERA "NOVA JADE" GREENE and written/choreographed by MARISSA ALMA NICK ... together, they are known as RHYMES WITH ORANGEz. "Take A Walk In My Shoes" presents itself as a comedic satire set amidst the illusions of a dream and driven by a simple Mailman gone hopelessly astray. This dynamic dance-opera follows the divide of an emotionally driven world, and the lucid journey of those who possess the ironic hope of achieving a unified peace.

SPECIAL BLOG EPISODE --- PLEASE READ! ""Protesting Makes Me Giddy: My Final Thoughts on Marching With Power Dykes on Crutches and Queers in Heels"

<img src="http://djnovajade.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1088778/0x0_1334266.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />"Protesting Makes Me Giddy: My Final Thoughts on Marching With Power Dykes on Crutches and Queers in Heels"

So, by now I'm sure all of you have heard of, read about and/or experienced first-hand the growth of what now has been going on in the Streets since last Wednesday, November 5, 2008. What a hell of a week it was, indeed. I took Sunday and Monday off from protesting (though I know there was a peace rally at a Church on Sunday afternoon - I was there in spirit), taking the time to rest, relax and reflect on the beginning of this extraordinary month of November. I've been very proud to be a November Scorpio for many reasons as of late, but even more proud to be a regular ol' lesbian.

Today I won't talk about chickens, nor will I talk about the Yes On 8 community. I won't even talk about being Black, but maybe once. Today, I'm going to merely celebrate and show my gratitude for being able to be apart of the amazing events thus far.

The most amazing thing is that we went from 500-1000 people the first night and over just four days grew to an active Movement of 20,000 LGBTIQQA ("Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Intersex Queer Questioning Ally") folk in Southern California on Saturday, November 8, in the Streets of Silverlake/Hollywood Proper. Not only that, All Across America walks and protests have been occurring since the first group of us decided we were not going to let this one "slide", with other countries looking in on us, as well. We've all been waiting for the Revolution, and happily, it HAS been televised. Contrary to belief, the world has been watching.

The Revolution <i>is</i> being televised. And on a cold day in hell, a Black man got elected El Presidente in America. Holy hot veggie dog, Catwoman!

I must say that even though we have grown into such a large group of people in a short span of time, there was truly nothing like the energy and electricity felt <a href="http://djnovajade.podomatic.com/entry/eg/2008-11-06T01_59_37-08_00" target="_blank">Day 1</a> and <a href="http://djnovajade.podomatic.com/entry/eg/2008-11-07T15_37_37-08_00" target="_blank">Day 2</a> of the call to action. The passion, the vigor... The self-governed trust amongst us to decide our own march routes, rather than have them dictated to us by Enforcers. The trust in ourselves to work as a unit, and to march until our legs had shin splints and our voices sounded like death. The sheer, un-staged, raw realness that only the people who were able to be there on those days will ever be able to express because of the freshness of it all. 20 years from now, 30..40, I'll look back and say "I helped something be born and grow", and hopefully by then, we'll not still have to be out in the Streets!

I am so proud of everyone who I have locked eyes with in the past week. I'm talking about the young girls holding an Equality for All Sign, with their Mom in an apron crying tears of joy as 1,000s of us marched passed their apartment entrance one Sunny Day in November. I'm talking about the people stuck in traffic who got out of their cars to jump and rejoice for joy as they saw us in the Streets, walking proud and being loud. I'm talking about the men, the hard, tattooed-up, gangster-looking men, holding hands walking in the marches. I'm talking about everyone who has said "no more of this" with peace signs, fists, markers and cardboard. I'm talking about myself and every single individual, because one raindrop raises the sea. I'm talking about the lil' babies on the backs of their parents or in their arms, asleep clutching American flags while their mommies and daddies make a brighter future for them. I'm talking about the Celebrity Power Dykes on crutches, excited to march and hauling butt as though they had no crutches to begin with.

I'm talking about Queers in Heels, male, female and everything in between.

I'm talking about the lil' animals draped in rainbow paraphernalia.

I'm talking about the people on the sidelines cheering us on at every corner, taking video, taking pictures and taking quick short moments to say "Thank you" as we marched into the night.

I thank you to everyone who has not been able to be at the marches, but has shown so much (such? s'much?) support to all of us via text, emails and phone.

Tonight 11/11/08 is the "Million Gay March" rally on Santa Monica Pier @ 5pm. 321 Santa Monica Pier, CA 90401. www.milliongaymarch.org

Not sure how much shouting I'll be doing, because I'm just barely starting to get my voice back; but I believe even in Silence, we say a lot. I'm just giddy to re-convene. It's all very exciting. I went to bed at 5 am after working on music today, and still woke up around 8 am, 'cuz I'm just so Moved lately. We shouldn't have to be doing this, but by gummit, at least we're out showing we care about being taken seriously as human beings, no matter what part of the LGBTIQQA spectrum. Whenever I can, and with sincere gratitude, I walk and will continue to walk in unity with the countless others until we come to an equal place in society as living, breathing Beings. This, is the least I can do as a person living on this earth, in this country, in this City of Angels. As a person who casted a vote for the November 4, 2008 election in the 18-24 age bracket, and a few days after, was no longer ever going to be in that age group again, but will always be in the generation of Change. As a woman who sees us all doing better for ourselves and the world as a whole, as far as truly coming together. I'm not certain if I'll write more about the experience or when, but for sure I'll be out there living the experience...

Peace to all. And to all, a good fight.

SPECIAL BLOG EPISODE --- PLEASE READ! ""Protest Day 3, 11-7-08: Sidewalks and Arrests and Fireworks, Oh My!"

<img src="http://djnovajade.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1088778/0x0_1334266.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />I am sitting in my friend's coffee shop in Long Beach ("Viento Y Aqua") after a very interesting day three of No On Prop 8 Protesting. Viento is busy with yummy teas and coffees and even yummier bagel sandwiches a-flowin'. Erykah Badu's laidback grooves are playing on the soundsystem. People are all around the shop sitting in the cozy chairs and sofas, some engaging in conversation, others focused intensely on their laptop screens... It's been a while since I've been here, but I highly recommend you take a visit someday soon. Good food, good people. Good times.

I went to bed around 4 this morning after watching the movie Labyrinth with my two friends. OK, really, I didn't watch much of the film. We didn't even get through a third of it. I caught myself "resting my eyes" for a "minute" during the film, when all of a sudden, I heard two lovely voices singing "Happy Birthday To You" around 3 am. I woke up startled with an oh-my-goodness! (actually I said "Shut Up" as in "Are you serious?!? Cool!") as the voices officially ushered in my new year with a special warm brownie treat in a bowl, topped with a tea light candle. Cute. That's the kind of thing my father used to do for me for my birthday. Simple things go a long way in warming my heart. Even the texts I've been fielding from well-wishers since 6:30 this morning. Happy birthday to me!

Now, let's see here. What can I say about yesterday? Well, for one, I've never been to a rally or march that started right at the time they said they would. I originally wasn't going to attend the Long Beach rally, but Friday afternoon whilst I wrote my recap of <a href="http://djnovajade.podomatic.com/entry/eg/2008-11-07T15_37_37-08_00" target="_blank"> Day 2</a>, I texted my Long Beach friend who wanted me to come to the rally with her and told her I would indeed be there. I felt like it was important for me to attend. She made a nice veggie dinner, I arrived at 6 o'clock on the dot, we ate and were on our way to pick up three more of our Long Beach Womyn friends from their parking spot near the end of the march route. We had this great plan to have a car there and a car at the front end of the route; however, by the time we got to the beginning of the march at Broadway and Redondo at 7:15 pm after finding parking, we were greeted with the city rally organizers who merely said "Catch up, they're way down there already". That in itself I thought was so strange, a bit on the "lacking-of-unity" side. I suppose it made sense that they kicked off right away, since I later found out we had an official permit from the city, but c'mon... Strength in numbers goes a long way. Let the energy accumulate a while. Ideally, we should not have kicked off until 7:30, if not later, but they should have waited at least until 7:15. In a way, it was a foreshadow to the sheep-like way we'd all be handled the rest of the evening.

Don't misconstrue my thoughts; as we continually caught up to the large crowd, there was definitely an energy that had been accumulated, and the unity was very evident. Heck, I was even put in my place to see all the many hues of brown-skinned folk out there, many of them I'd estimate at around 17-20 years old. That was AWESOME. But, as we convened at the 2nd meeting point of the rally, this unorganized organized event started to show its colors.

Apparently there was a speaker or two scheduled, but if they were speaking, I couldn't hear a thing, though my crew and I were fairly close to the thick of things. Additionally, as we walked through the city of Long Beach, nothing seemed to be going as "planned". To cut to the chase, we were supposed to end the parade near Hamburger Mary's, but after we got there, we were basically moo-cow ushered back eastbound, far away from the media stationed at our "planned" destination. Far away from any intention to really get our message out there to all of Long Beach and the world at large.

I know each day has been its own entity, and I should not compare Long Beach to the West Hollywood or Westwood rallies, but I felt like the police force wasn't really on our side last night. The display of their sheer lack of caring for our desire to take to the streets brought me back to <a href="http://djnovajade.podomatic.com/entry/eg/2008-11-07T15_37_37-08_00" target="_blank"> Day 2 in Westwood </a> when, after we had a sit down in the street near a bank heading northbound on Westwood Boulevard and the police said they'd let us continue, the same officer who gave us the OK also mentioned, "Keep in mind that you are inconveniencing a lot of people out here."

THE AUDACITY!

Inconveniencing people? Inconveniencing people? Well, kind officer, I apologize on behalf of all queers and queer supporters alike for our gross inconveniencing of others who have to sit in traffic while we take to the streets because fowl are more respected than us. I know people just expect the good lil' queers to stay silent and cower under mirrored disco balls, but when it comes to our rights as human beings, wouldn't you be out in the streets, too?

Since we're on the subject of streets, let me be clear in stating that for the most part, especially on our eastbound trek away from where we all thought we were going to end the rally, the police and even the organizers made us walk on the sidewalks. The sidewalks? Are you kidding me? Who ever heard of "taking it to the sidewalks"? That don't even make sense! Sigh.

I got frustrated at one point and started shouting to the cops, "My religion doesn't believe in sidewalks". Then my group of friends and I took up the chant, "Cops are gay, too", with one hottie cop in a Police paddy-wagon driving alongside us with a good sense of humor timing it just perfectly to chime back on her loudspeaker, "Side! Walk! Side! Walk!" That made me laugh, so I at least got closer to the curb for her. 5 minutes or so later, we finally cooperated and were strolling down the sidewalks to what would be the final place of our rally. I honestly can't recall exactly what the cross-streets were where we stopped but here's the synopsis:

*The cops at random times during the march (walk? stroll? moo?) played an automated message bellowing from a speaker in a going-to-put-you-on-hold-for-hours-while-you-wait-for-customer-service voice. When we weren't staying on the sidewalks at the endpoint of the rally, they played this in a loop, nonstop. Paraphrasing, the voice said, "Hi. I am a Long Beach city police officer, and I am declaring this an unlawful event. Please be advised that if you do not disperse immediately, we will have to be forced to use measures that could be painful. This could be a painful bludgeoning from one of our trusty batons, or a nice pop in the butt from our nifty pellet guns. And new to our arsenal are dogs... Which we will totally allow to bite you, should you not leave. Not to mention, we have gas that will not only make you cry, but may turn your insides out. Thank you, have a great day. Your call is very important to us." This repeated in Spanish, too. On second thought, maybe the voice was more like the Disneyland ride voice. Yes, that's it.

*At one point, a lesbian couple walked out to the middle of the street, with riot police lining all the four sides of the intersection, with us all lining the sidewalks. We wondered what they were doing. With one standing, the other kneeled down and began proposing to her lady. Of course, the loop was droning in the background ("...If you do not disperse, we'll be very, very angry with you..."). At some point, another protester went out to the middle of the street with them and sat as well. Apparently, the police were all choked up over the proposal and didn't like proposal-crashers. The cops rushed in on the random protester. Like 6 of them. The girl was little. She had her bandana on her face for protection, just in case. They had her hands hog-tied behind her in a matter of seconds. She was whisked away, kicking her legs as though she were doing a Russian jig, as they detained her. And the two women? Well, they are now engaged. Kind of? Hmm... To me they are, at least.

*More waiting on the sidewalks.

*People started heading south after a half hour or so in defiance and more sidewalk waiting ensued.

*More time passed.

*Suddenly, a guy in a red flannel shirt ran across the street and the cops ran after him with a quickness. They rushed after him, causing me and my friend and about twenty other people nearby to disperse like ants, pushing each other out of the way so as to not get beaten, tackled, or arrested. They got the guy, though. He was carted away in a matter of seconds. I think I almost peed my pants I was so scared. I saw a friend I had no idea was there, and we both looked at each other and gave each other a hug and a greeting of "Oh my god, did you see that? Be safe." When I found my friend again, I think she'd almost peed her pants, as well.

Eventually, my friends and I were done. It was an hour and a half till midnight, so they wanted to get me a couple of birthday drinks. For the most part, the police force were being as nice as they possibly could, but I still feel like they were just treating us like cattle. I also feel that even though I felt for all the organizing they did, we were so unorganized, the city organizers were friendly and as helpful as they could possibly be, making sure that we were taken care of in the best possible way. This over-sheltering is probably why I felt like we were just zombies following orders; but luckily, as far as I know, no real major incidents happened last night. There were a few Yes on 8 supporters shouting ignorance from their car windows, and sure a few people got arrested, tackled even, but I saw no one get punched out today. I feel it was a slightly more peaceful protest as of late. We were united, we were excited and filled with just as much passion as the two days before, even though it was expressed a bit differently. So, overall, I'd say it was truly an effectively good night.

How do I know? Because around 9 pm, someone shot a firework into the sky for us. About 5 minutes later, a second lone, red firework was shot into the sky. Both huge and so pretty!

And at midnight, I turned 25 years old.

I know each day has been its own entity, and I should not compare Long Beach to the West Hollywood or Westwood rallies</itunes:summary>

Day 2 brought us to the beloved Mormon church on Overland and Santa Monica Blvd, in the city of the Bruins - Westwood, CA. I had planned to be there on time, but it took me 20 minutes to exit off the 405 North at Santa Monica Boulevard heading west. Oh, and I had to find parking. So, instead of being there right at 2pm, my 5 hours of Movement didn't start until 2:25pm, PST. Better late than never, right? Right.

Even before I'd exited the freeway, I already got my first of the day's hundreds of supportive honks for the No On 8 Cause because of the bumper sticker I'd forgotten that I put on my vehicle recently. When I quickly realized this car's freeway honks were friendly and not full of random road rage, I obnoxiously honked back with the same vigor, held up one of my No On 8 signs and smiled...

...Still took me another 10 minutes to move from that spot as I exited toward Santa Monica, which is intense; on a good day, from that point to the Boulevard would take only 10 seconds. I wasn't angry, though. I knew why it was slow. It was the first time in all my times being in 405 traffic, HEAVY traffic, when I was at peace. I was anxious to arrive, but I knew that this traffic was, ironically, a result of the Movement I was so slowly inching toward to regroup with.

I exited finally and got closer to the golden statue figure I saw a few minutes east in the sky. The Church of the Latter Day Saints. The golden beacon to which thousands of No On 8 supporters would convene beneath that day. The beacon I'd passed by so many times in my six years of driving with an intriguing interest to visit someday. Little did I know that my visit would come in the form of protest on November 6, 2008. Now, I don't mind religion, or no religion for that matter; but when you step on any person's humane rights, then you're stepping on the wrong toes, and I just can't not say anything or do anything about it. I've always been kind of stubborn that way.

When I came up on Santa Monica Boulevard and Overland, I looked out of my car window and saw the people and the energy that was starting to collect outside of the church. I later found that at this same time, the press conferences had already begun as well. I drove around and finally found parking a block east of Overland and just north of Olympic, and on my walk up I got another positive car honk, told them to roll down their window and gave them handshakes and one of the extra signs I had for the day. "Peace, kids!" was my final retort to them as they drove away on their search for parking.

Immediately when I got to the meeting site outside the church, the energy was in full force. I joined one of my friends who did the West Hollywood ("WeHo") march with me the night before (see blog #1 - <a href="http://djnovajade.podomatic.com/entry/2008-11-06T01_59_37-08_00">"Today I took to the streets, I protested, Another wish come true: My story of Obama and Homosexual Pride '08"</a>), and her girlfriend whom was not able to be there the first night, though she watched as our first night of protesting got coverage on the likes of CNN. The three of us, along with the first 500-1000 early protesters, all shouted various catchy chants (like, "Gay, Straight, Black or White, Marriage is a Civil Right"), and exchanged hugs, energy and passion. There were even snacks and water. I had a gig later that night to be at, so I made sure to pack everything in case we started to traverse Westwood today. Something told me to bring some good walking shoes, too, and I'm glad I did; when there is TrailMix, there's a long hike involved.

I'd say we were all able to contain ourselves for about an hour after I arrived before the first leg of the march began.

We started slowly, going around the perimeter of the church, stopping many times, as the members inside the property of the church looked at us from atop their hill - shadowy, omniscient, eerie-like still figures that appeared almost mirage-like in a way. They were taking pictures and holding up binoculars atop that hill (one man so creepily even looked like he was a sniper standing at a high point atop the church), while we marched 'round the perimeter shouting "Shame on You" and calling out to them to "Come Down and Talk to Us". Of course, that didn't happen. So we marched. And we marched. After the first loop around we came back to the front of the church and made the plan to head to Sepulveda Boulevard (right near the 405 freeway), going west on Santa Monica. We ended up deciding to head to Westwood Blvd and go north.

We wanted Wilshire.

The journey to Westwood Boulevard and Wilshire Avenue was long. I was fortunate to be somewhat near the front through all of it, and I tell you, it was something else. At one point we saw three Yes on 8 supporters get out of the truck they were stuck in traffic in going south on Westwood Boulevard, who'd flipped the bird to us, shouted "Faggots" and then gotten provoked by some of our group of protesters who'd thrown water onto the back window of their vehicle. One of the protesters got pummeled, and later that evening I found out that he had gotten punched in the face, and his arm was also bandaged. At the time of the incident, my friends and I looked on and decided not to add to the chaos, because, well, we thought the guy was truthfully being kicked to death. There would be no need to add to the flames, though it was hard not to want to go in there and do something. We made sure we were all there and kept it Moving.

We stopped outside a bank heading north on Westwood Boulevard at one point, and the cops just weren't having it anymore. Being in the front, I remember hearing the sirens, then seeing one, two, ...four, ..., then ten police cars, heading toward us. Police in riot gear, too. With batons. Running straight toward us. I remember shouting in my very hoarse voice, "Sit down!" and someone else with a better voice said "Sit Down". We all started saying "Sit Down", and as the Police brigade came closer, a wave hit from the front of the line to the back, as we all sat down, so as to not provoke anything unwarranted. We sat. We sat. And we sat.

Then we stood.

It all gets a bit foggy, but at some point a Policeman talked to one of the protesters as we shouted "Let us Go" and "Some Policemen are Gay, Too", and I guess he told the protester that the Police would let us go forward, but that from now until the end of the night, they would be strictly escorting us through the streets. They were letting us go to Wilshire Boulevard.

We arrived at the intersection, danced, cheered and chanted. One guy even had a portable IPod docking station and his playlist included everything from Christina Aguilera to 70s power political funk songs. It was a nice respite to have a lil' music nudging us on. A small drum circle formed, and outside of the circle but keeping with their beat, I even jammed on the streets with my two drumsticks, hitting rhythms I don't think I ever thought I could possibly hit. Soon, we sat down in the middle of the Wilshire/Westwood intersection; which anyone whose driven it can vouch for its easy ability to be a very busy intersection. Especially at the onset of rush hour. I remember thinking once what would happen if this intersection were to ever get shut down. Well, now I know. As we stood and started to walk east on Wilshire, people were forced to stop and sit in their cars and watch-and-wait. People were forced by our energy to also join us and march. They were forced to be still. They were forced to move. Walking east on Wilshire for 10 minutes, I had the greatest memory. For some reason this walk was familiar. I'd remembered that when I was around 14 or so, I was a computer camp counselor in training at UCLA and had walked this route one day to bring a sick ex-girlfriend some soup. Don't get me wrong; if I'd known then that the walk would take two hours from UCLA to Beverly Hills, not the thirty minutes we both had estimated, I would have probably said nevermind. But, now I see that all those years ago was just a foreshadow for today. I texted her and reminded her about that time when I walked to her around this same time of day/night, but told her the disclaimer that I didn't have soup this time; but then again, now I did have thousands of people with me. Synchronistically enough, after texting her, I found out that she's working on her final application for the Sheriff's Department this weekend.

My two friends and I finished our part of rallying a little after 7 pm. People were heading to West Hollywood, but we had a performance to get to. Plus, aside from TrailMix and water, we'd all not eaten anything since breakfast. Right before we left, there were Mormon church-members who were adamant about taking down the signs we'd posted on their gates, ripping them down angrily and cursing the fact that we'd been there all day. By this time, the vast majority of protesters had already ventured toward WeHo, with many still at the church witnessing these last events as we all decided silently to stay at the church for more hours, or call it a day. Though we all would have loved to stay until the very end, a lot of us had to get to school, to our professions, to the other parts of our lives already scheduled before we decided to take to the streets on Wednesday evening.

Reflecting on the last 48 hours, I can't help be a little disappointed, though. I am angry that I've only seen about 12 Blacks out on the front-lines in the past two days. Sure, my calculation may be off, but to a certain degree, the number 12 doesn't seem too far-fetched. I'd grown increasingly angry that I kept sporadically overhearing mostly white gay males over the first two days of protest cursing Black people for their 70% Yes on 8 vote. Finally, I'd heard one comment too many, and sought out one of the protesters who, though not an organizer of today's event, could be seen as definitely a leader. I expressed my want to do something like this in the Black communities, more so, the Crenshaw Christian Center. She said, "sure", but then immediately (and in her most polite way possible) basically conveyed her fears of "tension" between the people we'd be protesting near (blacks) and our protesters (mostly white and male). I felt angry, but I took her number and told her to make sure she followed up with me, because I was going to text her right away to tell her to email me so we could get on it.

I doubt she'll actually follow-up, who knows. I'll try my other outlets and see what happens. But, her fears are the reason why many whites, let alone gay whites, never go farther south than Santa Monica Boulevard - Sunset Boulevard if they could get away with it. Though below Santa Monica Boulevard there is a Los Angeles filled with rich culture and diversity, indoctrinated leeriness to venture outside of ComfortLand has only caused more of the social rifts of Southern California. I, too, am at fault, though I am getting to know that these cultured nooks and crannies are quite accepting, when given the chance.

Of course there have only been 12 Blacks out there in 48 hours - they won't show up to a party whose hosts are predominately the same people that would never show up to theirs either. It's sickening to know that gays, black and white, just don't hang out more in general. It's another issue that needs to be nipped in the bud. But, regardless, I don't condone the white population scorning and putting down the Black population for voting Yes, when it's not like the Whites truly were out there to outreach to them out of fear. Similarly, though, I don't condone the black population for also not doing outreach in the black communities out of fear, myself included (though I did volunteer at a Black/Latino Polling place for No On 8 on election day, and told my black family and neighbors to Vote No). I also don't condone Blacks discriminating against the gay Movement, especially when we as a people should know better for many reasons, two of which are slavery then and being on the down-low now.

Have not the black population opened their eyes yet to the fact that the Black Aids rate in American has become its own Nation, a Nation higher than the population of many African Aids Nations combined, because we are too ignorant to speak about it? Gay or straight, in the black communities we'd rather die from down-low, unprotected, uneducated diseases in our community, then come out and speak up, putting a face to the thousands and millions of Blacks that are homosexual. We'd rather stay silenced than put aside our pettiness and fears and march, regardless of if you hang with the whites or not. Similarly, the whites would rather not try to tackle the Black community for "fear of tension". Screw that. It'll take more effort in the pre-organization than say a WeHo march, or even a Westwood march, but if we start now and get the LAPD on our side, then it's possible to have just a peaceful demonstration in the Black communities. Maybe I'm just overly optimistic, but it would not hurt to have a plan, structure a specific time slot and do what we are doing in the Black communities. We'll have less time to just rome in an impromptu way, but at least we'll be out there showing that this issue, truly is for all of us. I mean, they say if you can make it in New York , you can make it anywhere... So let's go to the tough places and try shaking things up there, too. It won't be easy, but we won't be cowards, either. And, truth be told, I don't care where you protest... Protesting can be a frightening thing anywhere at anytime, and it can get frightening unexpectedly, too.

If we're too sheltered to try to organize for the good of our gay community as a whole, I better not hear one more chant including "Gay, Straight, <i>Black</i> or White..." because obviously it really is not all-inclusive or else we'd all put aside fear in order for progress - Black, White, Straight or Gay.

Tonight, I'm in Long Beach. Honestly, I'm ill as all get-all, my voice is basically shot and my legs are tired. But tonight is my last night as a 24 year-old, and I'm determined to go into my 25th year tomorrow a woman with purpose. I'll have time to rest in about 75 years.

Peace...

For me, this election has been bittersweet. I remember asking my sweet universe to help me have peace - to give me an answer to who the next person would be in our white house. I remember waking up the morning of the Sunday of Long Beach pride earlier this year, calm. I had dreamt that I was sitting across from Obama in the oval office and there was a blurry figure next to him... But I remember Obama. I accepted my answer.

From getting that answer, my vote was for him; though, from the get go, I was routing for Clinton, and even though I'd gotten an answer, I still didn't jump on the wagon until I did more research for myself and knew why I actually believed in him.

Since my dream, I've been calm as I've seen the dream manifest, unfold rather, into reality. I woke up from my dream with faith that my guides would never give me false answers, but I also arose with an intent to discover the true reasons why I would take my answer seriously because I ultimately could still choose not to trust my dream, too. But, I trusted, I casted my vote - early. History has been made. My guides didn't lie. And Long Beach pride was super fun.

I was talking with a friend tonight and I was joking saying, "The worst part about Obama becoming president is that now I have to shape up and start doing something with my life." Though, we both know that I was raised to always be productive and make the most out of my talents and mind, we laughed, and then immediately got a little more serious. She said there had been some kid from the ghetto talking to a reporter on a news show that she'd heard earlier who was seriously saying that now he had motivation to "be someone." My joking was a reality to many. She mentioned that he said, "my grandma used to say, 'it'll be a cold day in hell when a black man is elected president', and now I have to pull my pants up" (referring to sagging pants). We then realized how cold and blustery it was on election night everywhere. And that, truly, we'd all already been living in hell, and the cold, chilling winds of change felt around america on election night were there to show us that anything, miracles even, can happen. I wonder if any pigs were seen flying last night in the winds. I can believe it if you were to tell me there were sightings of the such...

Obama aside.

Tonight I protested. I took to the streets of West Hollywood, CA in order to protest the high percentage of Yes on 8 votes that really made my election week (and subsequently, my 25th birthday week) bittersweet. It was great. Hell...wasn't even as cold as it was last night. No winds or anything. Lots of pigs though. They were protecting us as we went from rallying to marching the streets, sometimes stopping at major intersections to sit down. To be. To put a face to the straight and queer folk who voted No on 8, because well, discrimination is just so old school.

But while I'm on the subject of discrimination, I might as well talk about the only vivid memory I have of the marching. A moment that has been etched in my mind as a turning point in my life. It has forever changed me.

We were marching the streets and a bus, although going slowly, started engaging some of the protesters who weren't letting it come through us. The driver slowly kept turning into the protesters, and eventually an innocent elderly woman with a small dog tried to walk across the street. She wasn't even a part of the rallying. She even had the white hand, though still, motioning her to walk across safely... At any rate, the bus driver saw her. He repeatedly kept looking at the protesters and then to the lady trying to cross the street; but even in his vigilance, he kept trying to drive the bus. He kept creeping and getting closer. Closer... Eventually, one of the other young female protesters and I looked at each other, and she went for the lady to get her out of the way, while I just went for the dog and swooped his shaking body into my arms. The bus driver, out of hate, was just going to run us over, and if not, then he definitely would have run over the dog, who was on a leash scared, barking, as the commotion escalated and his owner tried hard to cross the street, though she, too, was scared and very frightened. It was definitely a close call.

Even going to pick up this dog, I knew he could have gotten even more scared and bit me, but I didn't care. He could have peed on me. But I didn't care. I don't even think I was thinking after I decided to act. All I remember is: seeing an increasingly bad situation, deciding to act, swooping the dog, hearing a lot of growing commotion, seeing the bus come closer, getting out of the way, the lady letting go of the leash while I was trying to make sure she didn't get pulled with the leash in her hand while still all of us tried to dodge the creepy creeping large vehicle... the dog stopping shaking, then standing with a little dog in my arms, who'd stopped shaking at some point and was relaxed, and the woman coming up to me, giving me a teary hug with the still, calm, silent dog between our thankful, compassionate embrace.

I think from the time the bus started to turn the corner until she gave me the hug was no more than 5 minutes, but it seemed like forever. After my friend and I finished our rallying (though as I write, protesting has been going on hours after we left), we ran into the girl who helped the lady near the bus. We acted on a situation within a situation, and I'm glad.

I felt like I was doing something tonight. There's a cause I can fight for, because even though I am not married, I have a lot of queer friends who have gotten married this year, and I'd like to think that they are worth me putting in my time to help the fight, even if it means losing my voice. Even if it means outing myself to the whole world. Even if it means almost getting hit by a bus to help a little lady and her dog who although innocent bystanders, were still affected by hate directed not even toward her intentionally. No one benefits from hate, not even the innocent.

Funny thing is that I've been saying that if Obama wasn't elected, I'd probably riot or something. Really, it would be to finally get myself a Wii. I really want to play this cool yoga game it has. In all seriousness, though, I got my wish. Though I still don't have a Wii and I wouldn't call our peaceful protesting "rioting" per se, I will say that I got my wish. Obama won. Hooray! But, I'm glad that I'm getting to do what I so desired. March. Protest... And it's even cooler that it's with the homosexuals. The homos weren't out to disco or party tonight. I'm glad. We all showed up to march for a cause, because in having de ja vu tonight, usually when I am marching on that route, it's to go to a Pride and get drunk or to Weho Halloween... To get drunk. And by all accounts, the straight folk usually aren't out there with us marching in the parade, especially not in droves. Tonight, they were.

It's about time we put our faces to the hate that is out there. And yes, I guess I can credit Obama for giving me motivation to be an achiever, though I'd like to feel I do a lot already. But, it's not enough. Not while Chickens have more rights than I do as a gay person in California.

Closer... Eventually, one of the other young female protesters and I looked at each other, and she went for the lady to get</itunes:summary>

*Sorry it's posted a day late, I guess I decided to...

"Take a break"

When I was 17, I found myself traveling in Costa Rica by myself. The friends I was to meet up with were out of contact somewhere in that vast land; so there I was, speaking Spanish, hosteling and doing some soul searching throughout all of C.R.

Little did I know that one day I would wake up on that trip around lunchtime and want to find a place with good vegetarian food, only to walk into that place (a Chinese food restaurant), sit down and hear on the tele something about "Los Estados Unidos". It was September 11, 2001. I stopped eating my veggie meal when I watched in silence as the towers fell for the second time, the third time, the fourth... listening to and picking up as much as I could on that Spanish news channel, as the newscasters reported, playing the terrible tragedy over and over again... Trying to figure out what the next steps were as far as getting in some kind of contact with my family back at home... Going back to my memory of when I was a young girl and my father took me to the one with the needle on it... So many thoughts.

I took a picture of a lone stick on the shore of the ocean that night as I drank a cold beer outside of my private hostel quarters. Someone had placed that stick there... I'd found it, all while contemplating and trying to stay calm knowing that serious things were happening abroad - abroad in my homeland.

7 years later, that memory still is in my mind; of being alone, of crossing into the next phase of my life experience. Of learning to grow up in a rapidly-changing world. I sure hope the next 7, 17, 117 years are brighter for us all.

Here's a chill mix. Enjoy it. Take a break.

PS: While you're in a chilled-out mood, come by to the FREE Jazz/Acoustic evening that's planned at Sabor Lounge (847 S. Union, Los Angeles, CA 90017) on Sept. 12th (TONIGHT). I'll be spinning.

                                Feelin' a lil' gritty. Here's a 30 minute Grime/Dubstep groove, mixed by yours-truly.

From time to time, I think we all need a lil' grime... Be gentle, it's my first time ever spinning this genre.

DJ Nova Jade's HodgePodge Consortium Show - [69:58]

"Time to Celebrate/Congratulations, Leaf!"

Although I didn't announce it in any way, 7.17.08 was my 2-year anniversary for this Podcast. Thank you for listening thus far...

On another note, this mix is dedicated to Leaf (http://www.myspace.com/wanderingleaf) who just currently had her AMAZING photo exhibit open to the public at the New Puppy Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. The photography project really launched in a magical way this past Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, as Leaf's year-long labor finally had a healthy birth. The exhibit/book is called Queer Women In Their Spaces, and it can be viewed at The New Puppy Gallery (www.newpuppyLA.com) from Aug 2- Aug 9th. I'm one of the women in this series, and I'm proud and honored to have been included in the mix of powerful, Queer Women.

This is the mix I spun the first hour as people trickled into the gallery a bit after 7pm. No track listing, but track #1 is a DJ Nova Jade* original, called "Longdrive".

                Enjoy!

                email/booking: djnovajade@gmail.com

Spread the word! Here's to renewal, growth and progress... And creating your own Spaces to shine in.

                ~NJ*

Fun times. Oh yeah, there's also a great song with a sample that goes "Ya hear that, Jack, I'm comin' to London." So true. So true. Can't wait till 2009. ;-) (foreshadow, perhaps?)
